Carl Elliot
This exhibit is on former Congressman Carl Elliott from Vina, AL. He is most known for his lawmaking efforts with the National Library Act, which provided for libraries and bookmobiles across the country, and the National Education Defense Act, which provided student loans for millions of Americans. After losing his seat in Congress and a bid for Alabama governor, he did legal work and authored several books on North Alabama including the Red Bay History Book, One Hundred Years of Memories. In 1990, out of more than 5,000 nominees, he won the first Profile in Courage Award from the Kennedy Library for a civil servant who suffered because of what he stood for. After receiving the award, Jacqueline Onassis, who worked for Doubleday at the time, worked with Elliott on his autobiography, Cost of Courage.
