Native American Display

The Choctaw Indians lived in the area that is now Red Bay for many years. Displayed here is a diorama by local artist Dennis Raper that depicts the area east of Red Bay near Hwy 24 and how it may have looked thousands of years ago. Above the diorama are images and artifacts from archeological digs on the property of former State Representative Johnny Mack Morrow. In the display case are fossils from Franklin County, which is rich in limestone. Other items are on loan from Moundville Museum that depict items that could have been used by Native Americans in the area. Pottery shards and points (arrowheads) are shown that were found in and around Red Bay, with grinding stones also on display. Clothing/regalia of what the Chickasaw tribes would have worn during the time of the Trail of Tears have been made available by the Chickasaw in Oklahoma.
